The Story behind our "Blah Blah Blah" Rock T Shirt Design and the legend that is Alex Lifeson of Rush

by Garry Barton

If you've had the chance to browse through the Classic Frock store, you may have notice that one of our designs is based on just three words. "Blah Blah Blah".  Now we've all heard that phrase before but what context is it being used in as a Rock T Shirt Design on our store?

Well, let me take you back a few years to the year 2013. That was the year the legendary Canadian Rock Band Rush, were eventually, (finally, at last, what kept them) inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  The event was a sparkling affair as every Hall of Fame induction is. Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins of The Foo Fighters wonderfully spoofed their Rush pals by wearing the infamous Rush Kimonos from their 2112 album era and delivered a wonderful stage tribute alongside Rush performing the eponymous track from what is still today many Rush fans all-time favourite album.

Grohl and Hawkins took to the stage to perform the famous 2112 Intro in their stunning Kimonos (Can we source these for I wonder?), before the Rush guys stepped on stage alongside them saving the embarrassment of Dave trying to hit Geddy's high notes LOL.

In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine Dave Grohl was effusive in his praise for his Canadian buddies: “No way I was going to sing a Rush song, and Taylor’s a great drummer and can play all those Rush songs, but God, the Rush songs are hard,” said Grohl. “We came up with the idea to do the instrumental intro to ‘2112’ and they would take over. … It was amazing. Tonight was one of the most special nights of my life.”

The highlight of the evening was when the band appeared on stage to collect their award and speak to their fans and the celebrities in the crowd. First up was drummer and lyricist Neil Peart who was as eloquent as ever quoting Bob Dylan and reminding us all that our brains will never be as deep and as big as "The Professor's".

Next up was Bassist extraordinaire Geddy Lee, who thanked his fellow band members, and the "most passionate incredibly dedicated fan base from around the world".

Then Guitarist and well-known practical joker Alex Lifeson stepped up to the mike, with a cheeky grin on his face to start his speech.  Well....we'll just leave it for Alex to let you hear it in his own words (and many comic expressions!) by watching the video below.

The place totally cracked up and he had the audience in stitches. Neil and Geddy were dumbfounded as they knew Alex had prepared a speech, and as the minutes ticked by (the Blah Blah Blah speech lasted for almost two and a half minutes)- Geddy was to say later that he was ready to drag Alex off the stage LOL

So following that speech at every Rush concert you would see fans holding up "Blah Blah Blah" banners, so what better tribute to Alex' wonderful speech by producing a range of clothing and products inspired by that speech - the best thing is, even though many people have never seen or heard the speech, they all love the shirts (and iphone cover, hoodie etc), and what a conversation piece it is.

Alex Lifeson, you wonderfully comic genius and guitarist - you complete legend - We thank you!

PLEASE NOTE THIS IS NOT AN OFFICIAL RUSH T-SHIRT! Just a design inspired by Alex's famous speech!

What's your funniest story that you ever heard about Rush - let us know in the comments!

You can get your own Blah Blah Blah T Shirt's here and we also do a range of Hoodies and iPhone covers.
